Don't remember K-horn bass as boomy. In fact, several stand-alone subs have been designed around that bass enclosure. That's the one thing about them that usually isn't tweaked or modified, other than maybe strategically placed Deflex.Were the speakers actually placed in the corners against the walls? Could be the woofers were damaged (surround rotting?) if they are 40 years old and haven't been stored properly. Could be the Zen had trouble controlling the large woofer. Is the crossover OK? The K-horns are rated to 35 Hz and need that corner reinforcement to get there. The LaScalas won't go as deep and really need cabinet reinforcement.
Remember, you are comparing a nominal 5-watt amp on a corner horn to a SS powered sub. And don't confuse copious bass with accurate bass.
