It could be a great bargain. The new $400 (kit) AE-3 is a stereo preamp with 2 - 6SN7 tubes, whereas the old $600 (kit) dual mono AE-1 amp had 4 - 6SN7's and separate selector and level controls. It would be interesting to see if the Cary remote volume control (which is rumored to actually be the remote volume control from the Creek OBH-12) could be added to this preamp. However, that would double the price of the kit!Are you seriously considering this preamp?
You might also consider something like a used Melos SHA-1. There's currently one at audiogon.com for $450.
