Re: Cary Tube preamps

Dear Michael, Whereas the SLP 50a uses the equivalant of two 12aux7 tubes, the Cary SLP 98 uses four 6SN7s in the line stage. In addition to being much quiter (lower noise floor), the SLP 98 will give you a more open soundstage, front to back, side to side, than the 50A. In other words, your speakers will entirely disappear. Both are gorgeous and hand wired point to point, but the SLP 98 has a beefy external power supply which drastically lowers the noise floor. Having heard both side by side, I would say the 98 more than justifies the price difference between the two. The 50A is a wonderful preamp, but the 98 is smoother, presents a more glorious midrange, and has better dynamics and bass slam than not only the 50A but also most other preamps out on the market. Combined with a solid state amp, both preamps will give you the best of both worlds. Good luck in your quest for the perfect preamp.
