Tubes Asylum Questions about tubes and gear that glows. FAQ |

Hello, all. I have two sets of monoblocks that use a 6AN8 for input; a pair of Heathkit AA181 35 watt EL34/GZ34 amps, and a pair of 60 watt Kt88/GZ34 Dynaco MKIIIs. I recently heard a pair of MKIIIs that had a new input board installed w/ a pair of 12AU7s and was blown away by the sonic superiority of the new circuit, which I understand is based on the Mullard Circuit, I think. Is there any salvation for the 6AN8 circuit? What about switching to a 6U8 so I could use Telefunkens/Mullard 6U8s instead of the American 6AN8. I heard that there is a tweak that places a potentiometer in the screen circuit of the pentode half of the 6AN8 to adjust it's operation... but I cannot locate the source. Another guy told me that placing a positive voltage on the triode sections' cathode would help... any thoughts? Thanks!!!
