Re: How do they sound?

The Ei Elite version (or a pre tested standard grade Ei) is a very fine sounding tube, with sonics akin to the the original TFK. Not quite as good as a genuine smoothplate, but surprisingly pleasant. For absolute sonics and if price is secondary, the original is still the best. But at the prices, the Ei is a nice value, and in the correct system configuration whomps any other new production tube out there. IN MY SYSTEM, if I were forced to choose between an Ei elite and a TFK ribbed plate, the choice becomes even harder - I prefer the smoothplate sound between the TFK types.

So if you can't afford the real thing, the Ei is not a bad substitute by any means and you shouldn't be disappointed.

As to longevity, I doubt the Ei will ever be the equal of the TFK. But 5 or 6 Ei tubes should last as long as one NOS TFK. And the Ei had for some time a VERY high cull rate with microphonics. Perhaps due to using the same worn equipment in 2003 that Telefunken used in 1960. This is why if you buy, insist on an elite or pre-tested sample from a good vendor.
