Check coupling caps

> Both components died within a few days of each other

There must be a curse on your house and the roof is shaped like a pyramid... Just a coincidence, my friend.

Any old tube gear should be checked periodically. Not only that tubes fail under high heat dissipation but also capacitors develop leaks under high voltage stresses. The hum you describe may be a DC leak through a coupling cap. Very easy to diagnose but you need to know what you're doing.
In general, any old tube gear that I buy I check grid and anode voltages and in some cases I don't even bother to check. If the caps look old, they will fail eventually. Replace them with quality new caps and you buy yourself a few years of reliable operation. You might even hear a significant improvement, especially with "budget" gear...
