Questions about tubes and gear that glows. FAQ

Re: To TnT: Your Fuse Blowing Response

HI Bama,
This may be a problem with the amp also. I have been working with, modifying, upgrading, repairing the Jolida amps for several years and have come across this in the past.
One possibility is that you could have bad grid resistors (opening when they get too hot) which would cause exactly what you describe. I know this because I had forgotten to install them once and my tubes looked like you could see them from the moon.
Another possible is something in the power supply. This is more far fetched as it would cause a continuois problem and not every few months.
Last possibility.....bad Svetlana tubes. I've been there many times but mostly with their EL34s and not with the 6550. Are you using new tubes are older pieces you had lying around.
Last question (I know it's simple but you would be amazed of how many people overlook this). Do you have the bias set properly and have you been checking it when the tubes start to get hotter than usual? i.e., starting to glow. I always run the bias at about 46/47mV on the 502.
Happy Listening,
Bill
