I recently had a similar problem on Ebay. But on the seller side.I sold some EL34's to someone in Illinois. This was the 2nd time that the USPS lost the package due to my horrible writing ability to the same guy (or not). Luckily I had a "Confirmation Slip" (which I do with the majority of my auctions over $30) which cost me .45 from the USPS.
To prevent that, I always have a confirmation or tracking number. Sometimes that .45 can save both the seller from losing face and the buyer from losing product!
And about getting your money back: if you paid VIA paypal, if they have an option to insure it.
