Thanks for the suggestion. If I can clarify a little:

The noise persists even when the entire compliment of tubes is changed (I have complete sets of both NOS originals and Sovtek/Svetlana's to match my 'working' hum-free amp).

What I've noticed is that the hum gets much quieter when I attach the 'tip' of the input phone jack. If I pull the plug out just enough to disconnect the tip, but leave the sleeve in contact with the chassis, the hum stays loud. I thought that when I connected the input the hum was getting quieter because the chassis was being grounded to the rest of my equipment via the sleeve, but now it seems that the tip is what defeats the grounding.

If I were to remove one or both of the driver tubes, would the power tube grids receive any input signal? How do I know that the hum would be reduced or that I simply broke the connection between the input and output?
