Re: Help with amp selection for HD 600

The MG Head OTL is a great amplifier at a great price. Tube rolling makes a tremendous difference. About $329 from Head Room, it’s the best bang for the buck. This uses 12AX7 and EL84’s.

Above that and in the price range of the Ear Max Pro is the RKV MKII, which uses PL84’s an uncommon German TV Tube. The RKV used to retail for $1200 but can be had from Meier Audio for $840 shipped. There’s one for sale on Head-Fi.org for $800.

There was a major sale in July from Meier Audio with a pre-order and it sold for $750 but it took 2 months plus to receive them. $800 is a killer price for this unit. A friend who heard all the amps at the Head Room Headphone tour said the next step up from the RKV MKII is the Ear HP4 but it’s like $4000.

Check out head-Fi.org and they’ll answer any questions you might have.
