Tubes? Not in my lifetime..

205.188.197.32

Not wanting the bother of dealing with tubes, I limited my amp search to solid state. The past couple of months I've listened to ss amps from Ayre to YBA, and many in between. While alot of the amps put out some very nice music, there still seemed to be a harshness or metalic sound in every one I listened to, something not quite right. (I'm not very good at verbalizing what I hear) I figured that growing older has changed how I hear things, so I resigned myself to buying the least offensive sounding amp, that is, until I spent an hour with the Graaf tube amp. Five minutes into listening to it, I KNEW that this is how music is supposed to sound, and every CD I played, reinforced that feeling. At the end of the hour, I couldn't say "I'll take it" quickly enough. To my ears, it was exactly what I wanted, it was right.
Because they didn't pertain to me, I usually skipped over posts regarding tubes, but I have picked up enough to know that not all tubes sound alike. My questions are, will the sound of different tubes be a general sound that you have a pretty good idea of going in, or will it be amp specific. Also, is there really THAT much difference between tubes?
Sorry for the basic, and maybe stupid questions, but I'm starting at the bottom of the tube knowledge ladder, and I expect to make a fool out of myself many more times as I learn.
I'ts funny, what I considered a pain, in regards to tubes, now seems like it's going to be a whole bunch of fun. Thanks

John
