Hi there,
I have build several copies of this Pre. Ultimatly I found that using J-Fet (2SK147, selected for 10mA Idss) in cascode with the 417A resolves all noise problems without requiring selected, low noise WE417A's....
The Linestage sounds best fully active and using the 5687. Implementation is also critical. Use Mills Wirewounds or similar as Anode Resistors and Rohpoint Precistion Wirewounds almost everywhere else. The Resistor for the First (75uS) EQ is best a Vishay with a non magnetic Silver Mica Cap preferred for the Capacitor. Foil & Film Polypropylen work well instead of ten Teflon Cap's.
No Paper/Oil Cap's, Carbon Composite Resistors and the like pleas.
