Vintage integrated amps are the way to go. In your price range look for Fisher, Scott, EICO, Bogen, Sherwood, Heath, Dynaco.
If you're new, better to buy from a dealer (local or net) so that you end up with a unit that will be in good working condition. Here's a site lead -- I think they're a bit pricy, but probably reliable. I've never had direct dealings with them, but have monitored their site for some time and have read about other's good experiences. Buyer beware.

I highly recommend you go to the Vacuum Tube Valley web site and consider ordering the all back issues -- $150 investment. They are an invaluable resource.
Some older units are ok, some are good, some are just amazingly musical.
They all have phono stages.
