I observe the same in the used market in Hong Kong and I actually bought one. The first thing that you should know is that the older Reference version is VERY particular with tubes. Many of the best NOS 12AU7/6DJ8 would simply not work in the CAT Ref Mk1 and I am stilling trying what tubes, other than the stock set, would work properly and give the best result.The later versions are more accommodating with tubes and are more quiet as well. But on the other hand, the sonic character change particularly when more 6922 are used. It becomes more "hifi" and less "musical" and also less tube-like. And there are many who think that the phono section also get worse in the later models but I have no experience on that except to say that the Phono on the SL1 Ref is the best I have ever heard.
