I drive the 1.6s with a C-J CAV-50, which is rated at 50 watts into 8 ohms and 60+ into 4 ohms (such as the 1.6). I think the sound is excellent.
I would not go much below 40 watts with the 1.6s. The sound stage is very nice.However, if you are really into the SET sound, I would look elsewhere for a speaker. In the "lab" downstairs, I have a DIY 2A3 amp (right channel) and a 45 amp (left channel), driving slightly modified Klipsch Cornwall speakers (claimed sensitivity of 104 SPL/watt). The sound is much different.
