I personally like the CV1988 6SN7GTY Mullard when listening to vocals and small jazz.. they are ultra smooth and the mids are, if you pardon me stealing the line from Barbara "like butter"...unfortunately, the bass is a little soft and it appears to be a little bit rolled off as well...for some rock and for a much more dynamic, albeit less refined listening experience, I drop in some different vintages of sylvania... they are definitely more punchy and dynamic, but don't get it quite right in the middle like the mullards do....
I really haven't tried too many vintages of NOS... I have tried a couple GE's that were total crap and extremely michrophonic, the sylvanias and the mullards... you can quickly spend more than the cost of the preamp in tubes if you really want to roll them!!!!
I really like the AE-3 preamp.... I must clarify and tell you that it is my first step into tubes, so I don't have a lot of experience in the area other than a few store demos... so take everything with a grain of salt....i just picked up a used dynaco st70 for kicks to try out a cheap tube amp with the newforms and see how they (and I) like.... seems I am going to be doing even more tube rolling!!!
the bonus of this preamp is that with a cheap RCA to 1/4 inch headphone jack from radio shack and you can quickly switch over to listening to sennheiser 580s ... it drives them really well... my only complaint is that the casing is way to small to swap out the cheap volume pot for something better..
