It's good to see some 30/30 users around here! I listened to a bunch of pre-amps with my 30/30- had a BAT 5i for awhile, now a CAT mk. II with NOS tubes (Radiotechnique / Mazda). To be honest, I did not really like the VAC preamp (CPA mk. II), though I love the company. I thought the soundstage was too small compared to other preamps, though that rich, musical VAC sound was definitely there. The 30/30 is capable of some really cavernous soundstaging with the right pre. I thought the Hovland was really impressive, and the CAT as well. In direct comparison, I preferred the Hovland to the Joule pre- more dynamic, and more 'live' sounding. The CAT lets you get in at a lower price- about $2500 used, and since they are always trading you are really just 'renting' it. It has a first class soundstage- wide, tall, etc... The tonal balance can be a bit 'lean' and the overall sound a bit mechanical, but it is one of those pieces of gear that covers all of the bases- no obvious glaring weaknesses. Another pre to check out is BWS consulting- about $3500 for the line stage- hand built, hand wired, very interesting and unusual tube compliment. I bougt the CAT from someone who has just purchased the BWS. When I asked how mcuh of a difference there was, he laughed and said, "more than you could belive." I will be testing it out soon.
