The SS does not have the pin point accuracy the BAT had. The 50B is airy but it not defined well.. not enough contrast from blackspace.I demoed a VK5i and found it to have very pinpoint imaging. Too much so for my system/taste. It seemed like each performer had been recorded seperately in their own space rather than as a group (they may have actually been recorded seperately, but that's not the point). I like the BAT a lot. It does an awful lot right like having an exceptionally "black" background. Very exciting. In a different system or for different tastes I can certainly see why somebody would love it. Shoot I may end up with one yet.
You may (or may not!?) find that a lot of preamps don't image with the specifity that the BAT does or have as black a background. Looking forward to your impressions of the Hovland.
