Bill, the store in Burlingame is called Future Sound. I was in there the other day auditioning the Sonus Faber Amati with the 250 watt Krell monoblock amplifiers. When I told the salesman the sound was a bit harsh, he suggested we try the Cary Slam 100s. I wasn't interested in tube amps, but was suprised at how much better the speakers sounded. Seeing my reaction, the salesperson laughed and said I wasn't the first person to prefer tube amps over the solid state monsters. For fun, he showed me a system that consisted of a 20 watt sungle ended Cary amplifier driving a pair of Soliloquy loudspeakers. Talk about being blown away! The audition changed my whole perspective on tube amplification and reproduced sound in general. The salesman name is Patrick. He is a young man who is extremely enthusiastic about low powered single ended amplification. He was a nice contrast to the other salesman who a bit jumpy for my nerves. I couldn't believe it when he told me he owns a pair of 5 watt Cary amps. He said he would bring the amps in for an audition if I would like. I haven't taken him up on the offer yet, but am interested in discovering more about the wonderful tube sound I heard that day. By the way, he told me to check out this sight to hear what others have to say about tubes in general. I am glad he did. You guys are crazy, but fun to learn from.
