The general opinion on Bose here (as well as most places where people have listened to more than just large retail store speakers) is that Bose is really not a good speaker. They have excellent marketing and some of their designs are visually appealing, but for the most part the speakers aren't accurate, have gaps in their frequency range, are built of fairly cheap materials, are over-priced, and underperform at their cost point.

I don't know about the Energy Encores, but from what I've read they seem to be getting good reviews. Acoustic Research also makes some speaker packages (the HC2 and HC6) with similar reviews (which generally say each sound better than the Bose, but for about half or less the cost of the Energy Encores. Axiomaudio.com also has quite a few decent reviews for their speakers... the M2Ti is one that I was looking at for fronts. They also have powered subs and dipole surrounds.

As if it weren't confusing enough...
