actually i couldn't agree with you more, but in my experience newcomers usually underevaluate what they will appreciate down stream and they try to save money by buying equipment which needs to be replaced as they become more sophisticated. a plan helps a great deal because it forces you to think about what your doing, not just approaching it empirically one item at a time. my preference would be to buy the speakers and amp as an anchor as these are the least subject to change. preamp would be next, then sources and software. if a person thought that they would get into tubes then he could focus on speakers that had the potential to work well with solid state or tube.
