Newbie question--new speakers, new demands on amp

Fairly new to mid-fi gear. An Arcam Alpha 8R integrated amp and have been using first Acoustic Energy Aegis One speakers and then Monitor Bronze 2's. Got used to my "normal" volume settings for the system. Just got new Paradigm Studio Reference 20's which are terrific--but I have to increase the volume on the system to maintain the sound level I had on the old Aegis and Monitor speakers. Is this imagination? Everything else--dynamics, details, soundstage--are a vast improvement. With the new volume increase it doesn't seem my Arcam amp is straining--but why the increase in volume level with new speakers? The volume control is up about 20-25% higher.
