Not a dumb question as the different combos and fill...

levels will effect the sound. I did it all and ended up back with silica sand (only). I also found out that how stable the floor is will vary the fill level (to my taste of course). On solid plaster floors I fill stands to the top and on wooden floors I only fill the stands 1/3 to 1/2 full. If you use silica sand (preferred because of its irregular shape), be carefull and fill the stands outside. I recently read that the dust from this product is something that you do not want to breath, but once contained in the stands it should not be a problem. When I did play around with shot/sand it sounded better to me with the combo in the bottom 1/4 to 1/3 of the stands with plain sand above. I ended up disposing of the lead shot @ my auto mechanic as they have recycling containers for toxic materials.
