Lead shot, sand or both?

I have just bought a pair of Sanus Steel Foundation speaker stands. They have two fillable columns. I know you can buy sand at Home Depot and I already have two bags of No.9 lead shot. What is best for use in the stands? The lead shot,sand or a combo of both? And if you use a combo, do you mix the sand and lead shot or do you layer them? Also, how much do you fill the columns? Half-way or all the way? Sounds like a dumb question but I never had to use stands before. Thanks, Nick
