Re: replacing paper surrounds with foam?

The surrounds on old woofers did what the spider does on modern woofers ie provides the stiffness/suspension. Replacing the paper surround with foam would be like removing the spider from a modern speaker - not good, it wouldn't work.

Older woofers had very stiff suspension because they were designed to work in an infinite baffle. Modern woofers use the springiness of the air inside their relatively small box to replace the suspension/damping once provided by the stiff paper surrounds.

I don't have a lot of experience with older woofers, but I think my explanation is correct.
