Dear Zobee,The foam is for creating an acoustically larger volume of air behind the membrane, as well as for eliminating resonance inside the cavity behind it.
Do not try to remove it, as the sound becomes harsh and distorted.
In general, I suggest you do not try to modify drive-units based on others' advice, unless they are very experienced professionals. Few people know more about drive units than Scan-Speak, so modifying their drivers is usually not a good thing to do.
