Flame Speakers

Does anyone know anything about 'flame speakers’. From what I can gather they used propane gas to produce a flame, have two electrostatic deflection plates and a cavity to reflect the sound. The response is said to be full range.

Apparently, flame speakers have been around since the 1800's (in theory if nothing else). Someone mentioned that instructions on how to build a flame speaker can be found in the July/August 1968 issue of Elementary Electronics. I just happened to stumble onto that message but have not read the article.

I think the general name for flame speakers would be the same or similar as given to the general class of flame organs ie "pyrophone".

If anyone knows anything more, or has actually heard one... in particular, what do they look like? What is their actual frequency range?

Kind Regards,
Robert Karl Stonjek.
