This is an interesting one. I own the HD-600s and also the DT-770pro (the closed back version of the DT990pro, same drivers). The HD 600s cost nearly twice what the DT770s. Both are excellent headphones, but there is no doubt in my mind that the HD-600s sound better with an expensive CD player and dedicated headphone amplifier. They simply sound more spacious. If you are not using a dedicated headphone amplifier then this is a more even playing field which can often leave the HD-600s sounding a little flat and lifeless where the Beyers never do, they always sparkle. The DT770 have a very very appealing sound that draws you in and makes you want to listen for hours. I also have the DT660mk2 (the DT770's forerunner), which is probably my favourite dynamic headphone of all time. Both of these just ooze sound with a certain "Je ne c'est quoi!", and I KNOW that the DT990s are the same.
I must point out as well, because the DT770 is closed back I tend to listen to them more (not disturbing other people). Also bear in mind that the DT770s work better with a walkman or off the headphone socket of a tape deck or CD player, I would assume the DT990 is the same.
I hope this helps
