The L and R outputs are undoubtedly full-range including all the bass if the receiver lacks a dedicated subwoofer output. Therefore, connecting it to the subwoofer's amp/crossover permits them to separate out the subwoofer range for it and pass the rest to the L and R speakers. That's how/why they are designed that way.
