Re: Surround speakers for ML Aerius i

Breadvan,

I experimented a little with cheaper conventional speakers in the rear and Aerius i's as fronts (no center).

Even without a budget it'd be tough to get a seemless match with the Martin Logans. But, I think you can still get enjoyable sound.

You could try some creative experimenting with the rears. Get a basic 2 way stand mount and place them on the ground firing up and into the corner (the front of the speaker would be about 1 to 2 feet from the corner and pointed well up the wall (1/2 way up ? less ?) . This will use the corners to throw the sound out into the room and make it harder to hear the directionality of the regular speakers . This might sound wacky, but it can sound good for movies ...and the speaker placement is almost invisible. Something would be placed under the speakers to tilt them back...a book, anything .

I didn't try di-pole or tri-pole surrounds with Martin Logan's ...but some of the one's you mentioned (mission, Klipsch) may well work. The M&K tri-pole that's about the level of their 750 THX system might work too (550 thx ? 55 ? can't remember ...). You'd have to buy these used or on Ebay to stay on budget. But, the earlier corner placement and regular speakers could be done well within the budget.
