The 12's are a significant step above the MMG's, and I'd say split your 1.5 grand between 12's and an amp rather than between MMG's and an amp. I'd say the 12's are pretty much optimal bang-for-the-buck. I've owned MMG's, 12's and 3.6's.In amplification, you might consider Arcam. They used to make a nice little 50-watt integrated that worked quite well with Maggies - I'm not sure what their lineup includes these days.
