A sub with the 2.3s is a great idea - for 20% of the time I would not bother with stereo subs.The REL is a good choice with the crossover at 35 to 40Hz. The Vandersteen 2wq is also a good option, and I'll bet you find yourself using it more than 20% of the time.
I tend to think that the vandy cleans up the mid bass on the Thiels adding to the Thiels lightning fast response and clarity...and the bass is tight and ultra fast.
