Spiking and weighting should definitely help, especially if your subwoofer is currently jusy sitting directly on carpet (as my Velodyne FSR-12 was). You will probably also have the perception of decreased bass because of the increased control, but as long as there is a level control for the sub, you can readjust the tonal balance to your liking.
