I appreciate all of the comments I received for my question below. Because of space considerations (room is roughly 12x14x9.5h), I think I am going to try a sub to see if I can get the bass I want and not over-power the room with large towers.I am currently looking at two subs that seem to get good reviews and are fairly inexpensive: HSU VTF-2 and the Adire Audio Rava. I am leaning towards the Rava for three reasons: 1) it is a sealed sub and I am only using the sub for music (LOUD, DEEP bass not needed), 2) the amp and jacks on the Rava look very well made and it has binding posts vs. the VTF-2's spring clip speaker jacks, 3) the oak finish on the Rava looks *much* nicer than the pebble finish of the VTF-2.
Now for my question. I've heard many comments on how the hook-up method on a sub will dictate how well the sub blends with the mains. The Rava has 8 binding posts on its amp allowing for the speaker cables from my amp to attach to the back of the sub, and then another pair going from the sub to the speakers. Is this the "preferred" method of hooking up a sub? I've heard good things about the REL hook-up method, is this similar or exactly the same? I really cannot afford a REL so that is why I am looking at the ~$450 (with shipping) Rava. Any owners of this sub please chime in with any comments you might have on the sub and how it blends with your mains. Thanks in advance.
