Home Speaker Asylum

General speaker questions for audio and home theater.

Narrowing it down a bit

Switch the speaker leads between the left and right speakers. If the scuffing sound stays with the same speaker, obviously it's a speaker problem (driver or crossosver).

I am at a loss as to why you hear the scuffing sound when nothing is playing. I'd have guessed tube rush, but that ought to be coming from the tweeter, not the woofer. Does the scuffing sound go away when you play music? Maybe it's a voice coil problem - when you turn everything off and gently tap or push the woofer cone, do you hear the scuffing?
