General speaker questions for audio and home theater.

My system started to sound bad approx. 1 month ago. Not focused, distorting at med volumes,etc. I change tubes out, switched from Tube to backup SS, played with speaker positioning, nothing seemed to work. Then with the NY disaster,I have not been in the mood to play, so I just slapped on music for backround effect. But last night my Son wanted to see what the drivers looked like behind the fabric covers. Well, jumping at the chance to accommodate my Son with any audio questions, I took the covers off the speakers, low and behold, the bating could be seen through the port of my left speaker. The bating that was held on by some sort of adhesive came loose and collapsed to the bottom of the speaker. Needless to say, I plan on fixing the problem this weekend. Kinda sparked my interest again.
