New Spendor S 3

208.142.142.17

Just out from the Spendor stable are a newest look-a-like version to the classic 3/5 -- the S 3. The S 3 I'm told by the dealer belongs to another line of spendor speakers while the S 3/5 have moved up to the classic line. I'm not sure nor the dealer is that S 3 are directly descended from the S 1 of the "Elegant Series" or simply a different model.

Physically, both speakers are quite the same in size, and looks. The only one difference you can see are the way the grilles are shaped towards the bottom of the speakers. They are slightly curved as it goes towards the bottom where the same spendor logo is. Nice touch and style, away from the plain Jane look of the S 3/5. Specifications for both models remain the same. Drivers from their spec sheet are likewise the same. However, I've noticed that Spendor added more info on the Vifa tweeters of the S 3 by stating that they are textile covered soft domes. Also, I heard some changes in the xover components. What this means would probably have something to do with the nature of its sound as compared to the S 3/5. I'm not sure though. We'll have to await a professional magazine reviewer to know more about this new spendor.

Ok? How about the sound. I listened to S 3 for an hour or so, playing familiar tunes that I played with the S 3/5 over and over again. And from my listening exposure to the S 3/5, I did notice and hear a gentlier S 3. The sound remains full as the S 3/5, but the bass seems more gracefully rolled off, and the treble a wee bit extended and gentlier than its sibling. This makes them more transparent sounding overall. Also, the S 3 seems to promote a more refined presentation all together to my ears than the s 3/5. It's also a db more sensitive. Probably, a good case for ss amplification if you wish.

These are just my initial impressions of the S 3. They have not been broken in I believe, so the sound may improve still from hereon.

Please treat this as a cursory impression to the S 3. Nothing definitive as yet except to let you spendor fans know there's a new model to listen to.
