With cars, it can be reliability issues that force replacements. Indeed, every VW owner I have ever met tells me "I'll never buy another one." Once they went Japanese they tend to stay with the Japanese - even if they're "kinda boring."My friend's dad had a Volvo - a cracked tail light cost $800 and took 4 months to get a replacement. He worked in plastics manufacturing - the piece of plastic would cost about $5. $800. They don't make that model anymore. Now it's a Chinese company. Weirdly - that might help them.
I had a Rotel preamp - they replaced said preamp after around 5 years - the replacement model is exactly the same internally but added a couple of features - and a new case and new model number - now it could be sent back out to the press.
It then destroys the resale value of the preamp because something must be wrong with it if it got replaced right? Public perception rules.
Personally, I like companies where they make it right the first time. Paid $1800 Canadian for my Audio Note OTO back in 2003 can sell it today (18 years later) for $2,300 USD. It was great then - it should still be great today and the market decides what is great not magazine reviewers or forums. And it's still selling.
If you look at the top-of-the-line models from the likes of Klipsch and Tannoy you notice they are remakes of their 60-year-old speakers. The new Khorn and Westminister are still their top models.
Here in Asia - the Audio Note K/Lx won speaker of the year in 2010 a design that goes back to ~1982 and 2020's pick is the Rogers LS-5/9 which is also an "old" design. I have both in for review. If it wasn't broke don't fix it. Granted these newer versions benefit from new better materials so they sound better as a result but it's an improvement on a great platform. Neither of these speakers can hype BS technology or driver materials. They sell on sound alone because there is no BE tweeter with a white-paper and graphics to help SELL the speaker. You sit down and you listen and you compare directly to the Hyped speakers which lose badly and you walk out with the old boring box. The hyped speakers you buy unheard at Music Direct from the reviews you read or worse measurements you read.
