Home Speaker Asylum

General speaker questions for audio and home theater.

"System dependent," "Different but equal," "Personal preference"

I posed the ProAc One SC versus Totem Sky question to my audio circle. Both are "finicky" or "sensitive" to the system and room with which they are used/placed.

In our dCS Puccini, Jeff Rowland Criterion & 312 system, if you use Pranawire Nataraja interconnects, listeners slightly prefer the ProAc.

In our Mark Levinson Nos. 37, 360S, 326S, 431 system, it's a toss-up.

In our Simaudio Evolution system, listeners slightly prefer the Totem.

In affordable high-end speaker cables, the Totem Sky loves the Kimber 4TC, while the ProAc One SC does not. The One SC likes the Cardas Cross, while the Sky is "meh" towards it.

Most of my friends graduated from college in 1995. After that, they entered the workforce, and free time disappeared. Thus, we cherished our little weekend getaways and road trips even more. In the home, your three girlfriends loved Oleta Adams' cover of Brenda Russell's "We Will Meet Again." On the road, we loved when the hotel had an outdoor hot tub. You never forget, when Sandy looked left, looked right, looked left again. There were guests in the nearby swimming pool, so Sandy did NOT remove her bikini top. Nevertheless, Sandy closed her eyes, slowly sunk into the hot tub, and forlornly sang "We Will Meet Again," longing for her ex-boyfriend.

So let's assume we have a reference system, which is equally good with the One SC and Sky. Let us also assume that you are in the sweet spot, and no one else is in the room. Then cue up Adams' "We Will Meet Again."

In terms of recreating the 3D image or apparition of Adams singing, the One SC does a slightly more credible job. In terms of note-to-note smoothness, controlling sibilance, and integrating with the musical accompaniment, the One SC is a little more balanced.

In terms of raw spit, emotional grip, directing your attention, having the inflections bite and mean something, baring your soul, and doing a double-take, that Adams' voice is present, the Sky is more in command.

For certain specifics, you, the listener, might have a mild preference for one speaker over the other. But if we are being honest, both are in the same general class, just "different, but equal." Thus, if you are forced to choose between the two, it might simply come down to personal preference, not a checklist of sonics.

Sandy's ex-boyfriend loved to travel, and go places. He would pick up little trinkets, with place names. When he and Sandy broke up, he gave her some of those trinkets. He told her that, whether alone or with a new boyfriend, Sandy should go to and enjoy those places.
