There's a beat up pair on eBay if you scroll through the pics all the way to the end it might give you an idea of the construction. Also, some of the other ads I came across mention they sound better with the grills off. (Sorry if that just put a bug in your ear!)
Unfortunately no info on whether they are easily removable. The grills look pretty rough in the ad where they are shown on their own. Was this due to the removing process?
I gather there is no info in the manual.
