a light sanding might expose the different depths of the stain here and there and may show differences in shading or even bare wood without stain.
You can start with a light grit (and your sweat) paper dry sanding on one side only. See how far you can sand through what's there. Be sure to brush off or vacuum while sanding so you can actually see it. Maybe a 500 or 800 grit. Any higher and you'll be there all day.
If you can clean it all up on the worst side and nothing obvious is poking through, then you can coat it. I would start there and see what happens.
warning: smells and odors in the sanding process may reveal past drug use :-)
