This brought to mind an incident in my one-time career in audio.
A customer -- a psychology professor at the local college -- described a problem he was having with the sound of his Bozak speakers. I knew Bozaks well but could not explain it. We were a solidly supportive dealer, so I offered a free house call.
In the late afternoon, we enjoyed a decent Scotch (my fee) as he put on some music. I had never heard any speaker sound like his left channel speaker. I could best describe their sound as "soggy". The right channel was fine.
When the customer left the room, his three- or four year old son walked over to the left channel speaker and urinated on the woofer. Before the customer returned, a male golden retriever entered and lifted his leg in the same spot.
"I think I have a clue," I told him. "Have you smelled your left speaker?"
"No. Why? Did you?"
"I didn't have to. Go smell it."
