Home Speaker Asylum

General speaker questions for audio and home theater.

I used to think so

I used to think imaging was a sign that the basics of my setup were right, but that's about it. I had Spicas hung from the ceiling, far too close. They honked a little, but delivered the heart of the music pretty well just the same.

Now with Tannoy Stirling GRs in a much better setup, I've changed my mind. The orchestra comes through as a whole, with wonderful depth. Even after nine months living with them, every recording, including those I've known for years, is a revelation. It's never distracting; it pulls you into the music, and is hugely satisfying. I guess that some of this comes from so many more musical and timing cues coming through that make it seem more realistic.

One big change is low-level detail. Notes decay *much* further. With the Spicas, they decayed a bit, but the end of the decay got lost. Now it's present, and makes the presentation so much more relaxed and natural sounding.

Good minimally mic'd recordings are spectacular. No sound seems to come from the speakers. You can stare 'em down, but the music quickly draws you back in. In this, they are almost anti hi-fi; it's all about the music, not the gear. The combination of imaging, natural-sounding detail, and effortless dynamics is just so satisfying.

Mono imaging is also compelling. The sound hangs in the center with no connection to the big wood boxes flanking it.

Is there a downside? So far, just one: the "Odetta" CD is gritty and harsh. With the Spicas it was bad but listenable. No longer.

The Spicas made me very happy for about twenty-five years, and John Bau knows I'm a big fan. But with the Tannoys, for me at least, it's a whole 'nuther world.
