Home Speaker Asylum

General speaker questions for audio and home theater.

No, I think good imaging is orthogonal with;

i b) good simple 3d recording IE minimal (or no) close mono-miking.

(By imaging I mean sound-staging / or the 'soundspace' in recordings as reproduced at home. Imaging of that obviously 3d sort does not happen for me at acoustic concerts. Antiphony when the 1st and second violins are separated R and L on the stage does still work at concerts.)

ii) matching rise and decay times for systems as a whole (room and set-up)

iii) phase coherence

iv) time coherence.

v) timbral accuracy - which depends a lot on i) through iv) because we get timbre from attacks and decays. (barely at all from continuous tones)

vi) 2ch recordings made using stereo techniques mostly don't image outside the edges of speakers. Surround recordings can and should do this.

vii) multiple close mono-miked mix-down recordings can, and often do, image outside the spkr edges.

viii) there is value IMO&E that recordings replace the visual positioning of instruments within a space with acoustically coherent positioning. Given that interplay is part of expression leaving the actual acoustic timing intact ought to be respected. It far too often is not.

ix) Most expression and affectiveness, by musicians, comes from their attacks and decays, so good imaging goes with good musical performance by a system. When the recording allows it to happen, that is. Too many recordings seem to set out to damage all of this stuff*.

x) that confusion reigns on this topic isn't surprising, given the preponderance of such *recordings in most audiophile's listening.

:-)!
