When you attend a live musical event, imaging is not a concern because you get this information visually. Recorded music, however, provides no visual clues, so it is natural that, in a stereo presentation, we at least subconsciously try to locate the performers.
Imaging is important because poor imaging becomes a distraction that degrades the musical experience.
As far as loudspeaker placement is concerned, my limited experience is that locations that result in good overall sound usually provide good imaging.
