Is imaging over-rated?

Robert E. Greene has a very informative online review of the Graham LS5/9 remakes where raises the issue of imaging as a goal. Imaging is impressive but has little to do with musical fidelity. REG says he carts around a recording of himself playing a three octave scale on a violin and listens to the recording on various speakers. He says some very well-regarded ones come nowhere near getting the timbre right. Now if you went to an opera and the imaging was holographic but Placido Domingo sounded like Bob Dylan, that would be unmusical wouldn't it, even if you could close your eyes and say exactly where he was standing? Maybe that would explain why many famous conductors listen to cheap rigs or don't bother to put their speakers in the 'correct' positions.
It's never too late to turn back the clock.
