Even side-by-side isn't perfect since there are still lots of variables you aren't controlling. But side-by-side is not possible when buying on ebay. I recall being impressed by an M&K subwoofer I heard in 1978 and I would bet my eye teeth it sounded deeper and tighter than the $150 Polk I heard at Best Buy the other day. Wanna take my bet? Of course there's no way to settle it and I don't even know what eye teeth are ...
