I owned a 69 Opel GT in the early 70's and ended up having to remove a section of the steering column shaft to access and tighten some of the oil pan bolts.

Figured that there must be a simpler way, so called the mechanic who had done engine/transmission/suspension mods on the car and his reply was "nope, you've got it figured out".
