DIY open baffle using speakers lying around

Just curious as I have been interested in open baffle speakers (spatial audio) and decided to DIY using some RCA (radioshack) speakers with linaeum tweeters.
I had some plywood lying around so I made a base and cut out a hole for the 5" speaker, put the tweeter on top--basically removed the innards (woofer, tweeter, crossover) and attached. Voila, instant OB?
These speakers before the DIY had a very open sound due to the linaeum ribbon tweeter, but now the sound is much more open without the boominess it used to have. They like to be far out into the room, but are not fussy on placement. I may do this to a pair of Boston Acoustics I have as it's fairly easy to remove the speakers, mount them in a piece of vertical plywood (W 17-22", H 24-35" according to one website)and compare. This was done using a sub, so I can't comment on them without.
Anyone else?
