how do you convert a high level sub input to a low level input

I read that you simply add inline a 39-47k resistor on the positive leg and a 1k resistor between positive and ground, you can attenuate the signal from a high voltage to a low voltage subwoofer plate amp input.

Before I blow up an amp and a subwoofer plate amp - is this true?
